Why peek-a-boo is secretly genius

The world’s oldest baby game is a crash course in memory, trust and comedy timing. Here’s what’s going on in that little head.

Around 6 to 9 months, something wild happens: your baby starts to understand that things still exist when they can’t see them. Scientists call it object permanence. You probably call it “the reason they cry when I go to the bathroom.”

Peek-a-boo is the perfect workout for this brand-new skill.

What your baby is learning

  1. Memory. Your face disappears — and they have to hold the idea of you in their mind until it comes back.
  2. Prediction. After a few rounds they start to anticipate the “boo!”. That giggle is the sound of a correct guess.
  3. Trust. You leave, you come back. Every single time. That’s a big lesson wrapped in a small game.
  4. Turn-taking. Watch for the moment they pull the blanket over their own face. Congratulations, you’re now the audience.

Level it up

  • Hide a toy under a cloth while they watch. Around 9 months, many babies will go looking for it.
  • Play with timing. A long pause before “boo!” builds suspense. Babies love a plot twist.
  • Use a mirror. Peek-a-boo with their own reflection is a whole new show.

You don’t need fancy toys. You need a blanket, your face, and a willingness to look a little ridiculous. You’ve got this.
